NeuroSomatic

NeuroNotes is a newsletter about the brain, the body, and how we change. I write about chronic pain, anxiety, trauma, nervous system regulation, movement, neuroplasticity, healing, and the ways our bodies shape how we think, feel, and relate. Each edition begins with a real-life question, experience, or observation (typically from my own experience), then explores how neuroscience can help us understand ourselves and our challenges. You’ll also find concrete NeuroSomatic practices, and reflections to help you notice your patterns differently, and eventually move beyond. The purpose is not to give you another set of instructions for fixing yourself, but to help you connect to what your brain and body are doing and to discover where change is possible.

You are not a problem to fix

Hi Reader! I'm so glad I can resume my regular writing which, as you all know, is something I deeply enjoy, especially your feedback! ❤️ This week, I've had a chance to reflect on something that often comes up with many of my clients (and me!): the imperative desire to "fix" ourselves. To fix our pain, repair our personality, undo our past, correct our reactions, smooth out all the inconvenient parts of being human. And I’ve been thinking about why this approach is actually...

Are We There Yet?

Hello Reader! This week, i've explored the process of change with a number of clients (and in my own life). So many of us have a version of "I should be better by now; i've tried this and that, and still nothing changed; I just need to get rid of this trauma/pain/blockage... and then I will finally be happy or at peace". I myself have sought to get rid of grief, imagining some fictional door I would suddenly upen into liberation. Yall... it's not that simple ... and thank God for that!...

Are emotions stored in your body?

Hi Reader, This week, there's been a recurring theme in many discussions: the apparent link between our physical pains and our emotional turmoil. Maybe you've had this experience too: You get angry, and all of a sudden, the pain in your shoulder flares up. Or maybe you start having pain in your jaw, and realize you've been clenching your teeth because you're worried about something. People say some version of this to me all the time in my office: “I know this pain is connected to this emotion...

Where is the space for change in your life?

6:30Hi Reader! Thanks to those of you who let me know that last week's post resonated; I love hearing it. To me, it means something special that we share parts of our human experience. This week has been governed by the realization that, once we give space to our fears, we also create space for change. For me, it was trying to find new ways to adapt to a set of changing circumstances, some of which are totally outside my control. Musings I think, like everyone else, there are circumstances in...

Are you brave?

Hi Reader! This week, something pretty scary happened to me. I was accosted quite aggressively by a very threatening truck driver who actually followed me home, driving dangerously close. And throughout the whole incident, I was legitimately afraid. I had all the physical symptoms of fear: my heart was racing, my body was tense, and I had that very particular feeling of wanting to get away. It reminded me of the kind of fear you can feel as a kid when you're being bullied, or when someone is...

Embodied, Adaptive Intelligence

Hi Reader! Have you seen the news about rogue AI (among other concerning news)?. It's a real concern, and a bit of a dilemma for me. On one hand, i find that automating certain tasks is very usef ul - especially when it comes to doing tedious repetitive tasks, or even to speed up research. Admit it, how many of you were directed here by Chat or Claude? On the other hand, I find it worrying how easy it is to delegate our thinking to AI. The better these systems become at mimicking human...

I’m back in your inbox… with a little thank-you 🎁

Hi Reader! It's been weeks... I hope you've been well ❤️. Not gonna lie, things have been a little rock and roll over here 😬, but I'm doing good 😁. I've been busy working on big projects, and rearranging life ;) Surprisingly, I found it really hard to get back into the habit of writing this newsletter even though this is something that I deeply enjoy, and even though it feeds my inner growth and my own healing process. So that got me thinking about habits - how we create habits and how we get...

When “I’m fine” becomes avoidance

Hello Reader! I hope you are well. When anyone asks you “how are you?”, do you, like me, answer automatically, “I’m fine,” even though you may not be? It’s an interesting social convention, like a ritual opening, but one that potentially masks the deeper regard we hold about ourselves. Most of the time, the person asking doesn't expect a complete inventory of our physical, emotional, relational, and existential state. Imagine answering honestly every single time, at school drop-off, in the...
