Freedom and Ease - NeuroNotes 24

Hello Reader!

I’m writing this from Calgary, where I’ll be diving into another round of advanced training — a reminder that even as a teacher and therapist, I’m always a student myself. Every time I step into a room of people exploring how brains and bodies learn, I’m struck by the magic of one thing: how much ease changes everything. ❤️

Musings

Some of you who have experienced sessions with me will know what I'm talking about: the ease of being in your body that comes after a movement lesson; the ease with which old thinking patterns metabolize into something more life-sustaining.

We tend to think of freedom as something outside of us — more time, more space, fewer obligations. But the truth is, freedom begins inside the body. When movement feels restricted, whether from tension, pain, or emotional stress, our world shrinks a little. Choices feel smaller, possibilities narrower.

Yet when movement becomes easy, everything expands. The breath flows again. The eyes soften. The spine finds its length. Everything is ...lighter. Even thoughts feel more fluid! Ease of movement gives rise to ease of being — and that’s where true freedom lives.

Try this week's practice with the express goal of finding ease... and if that means doing nothing, or next to nothing, then so be it! You are creating a space of freedom.

NeuroSomatic

NeuroNotes is a newsletter about the brain, the body, and how we change. I write about chronic pain, anxiety, trauma, nervous system regulation, movement, neuroplasticity, healing, and the ways our bodies shape how we think, feel, and relate. Each edition begins with a real-life question, experience, or observation (typically from my own experience), then explores how neuroscience can help us understand ourselves and our challenges. You’ll also find concrete NeuroSomatic practices, and reflections to help you notice your patterns differently, and eventually move beyond. The purpose is not to give you another set of instructions for fixing yourself, but to help you connect to what your brain and body are doing and to discover where change is possible.
